Background of the Study

Leadership development is critical for the growth and sustainability of small businesses. Effective leadership skills enable entrepreneurs to make strategic decisions, manage resources efficiently, and inspire teams toward achieving organizational goals (Akinwale & Musa, 2024). In the context of small businesses, leadership development is particularly important as the entrepreneur often assumes multiple roles, directly impacting business performance.

In Taraba State, small businesses contribute significantly to the local economy. However, many entrepreneurs lack formal training in leadership, which limits their ability to scale their businesses and navigate challenges effectively. Studies by Bello and Ibrahim (2023) emphasize that leadership development programs tailored for small business owners can significantly enhance their growth and competitiveness.

This study explores the relationship between leadership development and small business growth in Taraba State, focusing on the challenges and benefits of implementing leadership training programs.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the critical role of leadership in driving business growth, many small business owners in Taraba State lack access to leadership development programs. This gap hinders their ability to manage resources, adapt to market changes, and achieve sustainable growth.

Research by Usman and Adebayo (2024) shows that small businesses with well-developed leadership structures perform better in terms of profitability and growth. However, there is limited research on the impact of leadership development on small businesses in Taraba State. This study addresses this issue by examining the effect of leadership development on business growth.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the relationship between leadership development and small business growth in Taraba State.

  2. To identify challenges faced by small business owners in accessing leadership training.

  3. To recommend strategies for promoting leadership development among small business owners.

Research Questions

  1. What is the relationship between leadership development and small business growth in Taraba State?

  2. What challenges do small business owners face in accessing leadership training programs?

  3. What strategies can enhance leadership development for small business owners?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Leadership development has a significant positive effect on small business growth.

  2. Limited access to leadership training hinders small business performance.

  3. Leadership training programs significantly improve business growth in Taraba State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on small businesses in Taraba State, examining the impact of leadership development on their growth. It does not include larger organizations or regions outside Taraba State. Limitations include differences in leadership needs across industries and potential biases in self-reported data.
